1994 - Eagles - Irvine Meadows Amphitheatre

This was a reunion show, one of the first where a major band got

back together and decided to tour again.  So I was all, I never saw

the Eagles, lets go! 

Why does no one stop me when I get like that?

It was so boring.  We had lawn tickets and couldn't see too well

and as it turns out I didn't know as many songs as I thought I would.

The crowd was all old and just wanted to relive their youth by

smoking and drinking like they were teens again.  

I know this was an amazing show for people who were their fans. 

Sorry, it just wasn't for me.

1994 - Frank Black - McCabe's Music Store

Ron will have much more to say about this show. But, we missed very few Frank Black shows.
I remember McCabe's as being tiny and such an interesting place. Full of instruments and serious music people. This show was in a small stage in the back of the shop. Any of you who know Ron know about his crush on Winona Ryder. Well, guess who sat directly in front of us? Winona Ryder, Gwyneth Paltrow and Gwyneth's brother. I don't remember much of the show but I spent most of the show watching them! I kept elbowing Ron to make his move, he had his chance! Fun show in an interesting venue. First Frank plays a solo set, then is joined by his band (Eric bass, Nick drums, Lyle guitar). right around the time Teenager was released. Frank talks about the songs a lot and does my all time favorite rock star move, holding the pick up in front of him and talking.

1994 - Nine Inch Nails - The Palace

 

The Self Destruct Tour.

It was amazing.  Went with Ron to this show.

I think it was his first time seeing them.

The Palace is a smallish, club type venue that has featured

so many amazing artists like Frank Sinatra and all the big bands.

So it has this classy vibe with an amazing wood dance floor.

Nine Inch Nails is huge at this point and playing this 

small venue was amazing.

1994 - Frank Black - Roxy Theatre - The Foothill

I combined the info on these shows cause they were so similar.

This tour had early and late shows.

The Foothill show was late.  

The early show was at Cal State Fullerton.

He was still touring for Teenager of the Year.

Can't find a specific set-list for these shows but I did collect a 

few from this time period.  

I will include two of them here!

1994 - Cocteau Twins - Universal Amphitheatre

 

What an amazing show this was.

Went with Ron.  

It was Easter Sunday.

Such a magical band to hear on this day.

I will never forget looking at Ron at one point during the show 

and he had his hands on his head in amazement!  

Their stage set up was long gauzy curtains with fog and lights

creating shadows so you never really saw them at all.

It was all atmosphere.

And so wonderful.

Opening band was Luna whom Ron and I both love.

One of my favourite things to do is to try to get the

set-list from the show and I got Luna's.

On their last tour, the Twins played the Wiltern Theatre, and their move up to the 6,000-seat Universal Amphitheatre reflects the band's growing commercial base.  The current tour--their first since 1990--will also be their first with a full band. Having previously relied on sequencers to reproduce the full sound of their albums, the band is now touring with two more guitarists, a percussionist and a drummer.  "I used to be completely paranoid about live performance," said Raymonde about the Twins' decision to tour with a full band. "I wish we'd done it before because it sounds so much better."What can you lose? Maybe we'll bring some other musicians on a record one day. You've got to be open-minded about these things. You don't really get anywhere unless you change."

1994 - Frank Black - The Coach House

Went with Ron.

We went to the Coach House quite a few times.

If you have never been there it is like a warehouse

in an industrial park.  It serves dinner and if you make a dinner

reservation you can sit closer to the stage.

Everyone sits at table and watches the show which

is on a smallish stage.  Sound is great, not the hollow weird sound

you would think since it is in a pre-fab industrial building.  

I couldn't find a specific set-list for this show but it was so

fun watching Frank Black at this time.  His backing band was great. 

He was touring for Teenager of the Year and

not only doing these solo shows but opening for The Ramones

and They Might Be Giants.  In the band at this time was

the brilliant Eric Drew Feldman and Lyle Workman.

Who knew then that Lyle Workman would go on the

make such great music and movie soundtracks as,

Get Him to The Greek, Super Bad and Forgetting Sarah Marshall.

 I have been searching on the internet for a photo of Frank Black

staring at his pick.  Between songs Frank will tell you about the songs

or just talk and as he does this he will hold out his pick in

front of him and stare at it in the stage lights.

It became one of my favourite parts of the show,

waiting for him to do this!

I will keep looking for a picture of it. 

Someone out there must have taken one!
