1994 - Sugar - Hollywood Palladium

Went to this show with Ron and Bianca.
What a powerful show.
Wish I had seen Husker Du.
Magnapop opened the show.
Can't find a setlist or any info online.
If you were there what do you remember?

1994 - They Might Be Giants - The Pantages Theatre

Went with Ron and Bianca.
Opening artist, Frank Black

This was a crazy show.  It was really like we had stepped into a world we didn't belong too.
Or the joke was on us cause we weren't supposed to be there cause we didn't know the secret handshake.
The crowd knew all the moves and acted out the songs with TMBG as they were played.  Ron and I stood or sat and watched all this play out like we really were in a foreign land.  It was nuts.  Weird Al Yankovick was sitting two rows behind us.  That was awesome.  Frank Black was great.  Playing his songs quickly like the time was running out for him and well maybe it was!
Here is a review from the LA Times...
LA Times Pop Music Reviews
They Might Be Giants, but Then Again . . .
November 19, 1994
RICHARD CROMELIN
It's OK to be geeky.
That's the underlying message in everything done by They Might Be Giants, the Brooklyn band that's gradually built a strong cult following of fans grateful for the freedom to wear fezzes and pogo uninhibitedly down the aisles.
Actually, the fez look has faded into the TMBG archives, but at the Pantages Theatre on Thursday the essence remained the same, even as the sound has matured and expanded. The core duo of John Flansburgh and John Linnell now fronts a full-fledged, versatile band, but the two remain nerdy naifs getting a kick out of playing rock star.
The music ranged from an adenoidal, streetcorner vocal-group sound descended from homies Dion & the Belmonts to jerky new-wave to Beach Boys-ish pop to campfire kiddie tunes. Intricate vocal arrangements made unwieldy word clusters flow smoothly and to comic effect, and there was even some black-and-white TV era "sounds of the city"-type scoring.
But a little Giants can go a long way. Balancing the charm of "Birdhouse in Your Soul" and the moral affirmation of "Your Racist Friend" were musical jokes that went on way too long and never paid off, and a lack of coherence in their mix of spoofery and sincerity.
Frank Black opened with a solo set of songs about Pong, the Ramones, John Denver and assorted esoterica. Eventually he started slinging his guitars onto his back when he picked up a new one, and when he walked off the stage he looked like some prehistoric creature festooned with spiky armor.

1994 - Dinosaur Jr. - Santa Monica Civic Auditorium

Went to this show with Ron.
To all of you who have teased me over the years,
yes, I liked Dinosaur Jr. before they covered
Just Like Heaven by The Cure.  Though that
just made me like Dinosaur Jr. more!
I must have bought two dozen copies
of Just Like Heaven at the SST shop on
Sunset and sent them out to friends.
I  miss that store.....
This was a fun show.  If I haven't told you already
the Santa Monica Civic is like a high school basketball
gym.  It has bleachers in the back along the wall and
you just sit where you want.  They put on a great
show. This tour was supporting the release of
Without A Sound.  Its still one of my favourite
Dinosaur Jr. cd's.

1994 - Nine Inch Nails - Universal Amphitheatre

I seem to remember going to this show with Ron and Bianca.
Opening acts were Jim Rose Circus and Marilyn Manson.
Marilyn Manson got a mixed reaction.  People either love
or hate this band.  I thought they were really entertaining.
That  Beautiful People song is very catchy.
Found a set-list online from someone who recorded the show.
Thank you and hope its correct!

By now if you have been following this blog you know

This was a great show.  Wish I had been
able to go all 4 nights that they played Universal.

1994 - Lollapalooza - CSUDH Velodrome Field

Well, here we are at the end of this tour.
Remember we caught the incredibly hot first show
and will never forget it.
This leg of the tour was without the legendary Frogs.
I went to this show for the Smashing Pumpkins.
I love this band.  They make me want to
just get up and dance.  It was late summer
and a wonderful night.  When it got dark and
the bonfires were lit it was an amazing thing.
There were some individual experiences
at this show.  I went with Ron and Bianca.
Ron got his glasses broken in the pit for the
Breeders of all bands.  He spent the rest of the
show without glasses and drove us home.
I think it was during Green Day cause they replaced
the Boredoms, that Bianca got caught in their
pit and received a Doc Martin to the back of the
head and/or someone landed on her back.
I just remember her getting injured.  I stayed
at a safe distance from the shenanigans.
I mean really who would have thought that
someone could sustain damage during The Breeders!

1994 - Lush - Glam Slam

Went to this show with Ron.
He will have more in depth comments I am sure!
This show was at the club Prince owned for a time in
downtown Los Angeles.  It was filled with Prince
memorabilia and done up in his purple theme! With
naked lady statues and well typical Prince stuff.
This show had two opening bands on the bill,
That Dog and Weezer.  Loved them!
A couple of songs in to Lush's set the electricity
went out.  It was a small venue for this show.
Should have been at the El Rey or Wiltern.
So we waited around for awhile to see if the show
would resume and it didn't.  We were asked to come
back the next night and use our same ticket.
We did!  No Weezer but a band called
Sammy played. Very fun experience.
The ticket is signed by Miki.

1994 - Metallica - CSUDH Velodrome Field

Went with Ron, Bianca and Shawn if I remember right.
I had never seen Metallica though
I had had many opportunities.
I had my secret metal love but it went more
towards Slayer than Metallica.
I was a secret listener of KNAC.
But in my defence of that I had listened
to KNAC since I was a kid and it was
the only station to play rock.
And it was in Long Beach!
But by the time this tour came around
Metallica were huge, widely loved MTV gods!
So, I decided I wanted to see them.
What a well oiled, precision machine they were(are?).
All moves were in perfect harmony
(who choreographed this thing?),
every "fuck" and city name was perfectly placed.
And they sounded just like a cd.
It was a great show.  How could it not be?
Everything was perfect.
Like a script had been made to tell them to
insert ______ here, be it guitar solo,
drum solo, or whatever.
I have to say I really had a good time and was impressed.
Got a setlist from setlist.fm (thank you!)

1994 - Luna - The Coach House

Saw this show with Ron.
After we saw them open for the Cocteau Twins
on Easter we were fans.
I can't really find any details on the show.
I had the opportunity to get another set list for them.

Found a link to an article from the L.A. Times on them and this tour.

Loved going to shows at The Coach House.
Such a relaxed venue.  People eating or sitting at the bar.
And we were lucky enough to see some wonderful shows there!

1994 - Lollapalooza - Sam Boyd Stadium

I was on a roll of not missing any of the Lollapalooza shows.  This was the first show of the tour and we took the four hour drive and had to see it. The line-up was;
Main Stage: The Smashing Pumpkins, Beastie Boys, George Clinton & the P-Funk All Stars, The Breeders, A Tribe Called Quest, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, L7, Boredoms
Side Stage: The Flaming Lips, The Verve, The Boo Radleys, The Frogs, Guided By Voices, Lambchop, Girls Against Boys, Rollerskate Skinny, Palace Songs, Stereolab, Fu-Schnickens, The Pharcyde, Shudder to Think, Luscious Jackson, God Lives Underwater, King Kong, Charlie Hunter Trio, Shonen Knife, Blast Off Country Style, Souls of Mischief, Cypress Hill, The Black Crowes
This show was in Sam Boyd Stadium.  A football/track stadium made of concrete with metal benches.  It was 126 degrees outside.  Yes, 126 degrees.  You can't bring water or food into the stadium with you.  They had the mist tents set up and the security let the hoses run but it did little to eliminate the heat.  I sat on a bench covered in a shroud to help eliminate the inevitable burn.  The sun going down didn't help cause it stays hot there.  I really liked the Smashing Pumpkins luckily I got to see them a bunch.  It was the first time I got to see Nick Cave.  I loved Boredoms.  I will always remember I got to see the legendary Frogs too! Went with Ron and Bianca and really my biggest memory besides the heat was I told security I had to bring my bottles of water in with me cause I was pregnant.  I wasn't and yes, they let me in with my water!

1994 - Eagles - Irvine Meadows Amphitheatre

This was a reunion show, one of the first where a major band got
back together and decided to tour again.  So I was all, I never saw
the Eagles, lets go!
Why does no one stop me when I get like that?
It was so boring.  We had lawn tickets and couldn't see too well
and as it turns out I didn't know as many songs as I thought I would.
The crowd was all old and just wanted to relive their youth by
smoking and drinking like they were teens again.
I know this was an amazing show for people who were their fans.
Sorry, it just wasn't for me.

1994 - Frank Black - McCabe's Music Store

Frank Black at McCabe's in Santa Monica on May 27, 1994

Ron will have much more to say about this show. But, we missed very few Frank Black shows.
I remember McCabe's as being tiny and such an interesting place. Full of instruments and serious music people. This show was in a small stage in the back of the shop. Any of you who know Ron know about his crush on Winona Ryder. Well, guess who sat directly in front of us? Winona Ryder, Gwyneth Paltrow and Gwyneth's brother. I don't remember much of the show but I spent most of the show watching them! I kept elbowing Ron to make his move, he had his chance! Fun show in an interesting venue. First Frank plays a solo set, then is joined by his band (Eric bass, Nick drums, Lyle guitar). right around the time Teenager was released. Frank talks about the songs a lot and does my all time favorite rock star move, holding the pick up in front of him and talking.

1994 - Nine Inch Nails - The Palace

The Self Destruct Tour.
It was amazing.  Went with Ron to this show.
I think it was his first time seeing them.
The Palace is a smallish, club type venue that has featured
so many amazing artists like Frank Sinatra and all the big bands.
So it has this classy vibe with an amazing wood dance floor.
Nine Inch Nails is huge at this point and playing this
small venue was amazing.

1994 - Frank Black - Roxy Theatre - The Foothill

I combined the info on these shows cause they were so similar.
This tour had early and late shows.
The Foothill show was late.
The early show was at Cal State Fullerton.
He was still touring for Teenager of the Year.
Can't find a specific set-list for these shows but I did collect a
few from this time period.
I will include two of them here!

1994 - Cocteau Twins - Universal Amphitheatre

What an amazing show this was.
Went with Ron.
It was Easter Sunday.
Such a magical band to hear on this day.
I will never forget looking at Ron at one point during the show
and he had his hands on his head in amazement!
Their stage set up was long gauzy curtains with fog and lights
creating shadows so you never really saw them at all.
It was all atmosphere.
And so wonderful.
Opening band was Luna whom Ron and I both love.
One of my favourite things to do is to try to get the
set-list from the show and I got Luna's.
Here is the Cocteau Twins set list-
Pur / Heaven or Las Vegas / Pitch the Baby / Carolyn's Fingers / For Phoebe Shall a Baby / Evangeline / Whales Tales / Lorelei / Road River and Rail / Bluebeard / Summerhead / Iceblink Luck / Blue Bell Knoll / Cico Buff / Aikea-Guinea / Ella Megalast Burls Forever / Pink Orange Red / Sugar Hiccup / Crushed / Cherry-Coloured Funk

I found an article in the L.A. Times previewing the show-
At the Cocteau 'Cafe' : Scottish trio's latest album reflects a turbulent period of personal growth. Southland gig begins Sunday at Universal Amphitheater.
POP BEAT
April 02, 1994|ROBERT LEVINE | TIMES STAFF WRITER
While "Four Calendar Cafe" only reached No. 78 on the national pop charts after its November release, it has so far nearly matched its predecessor with sales of more than 200,000 in the United States--and Capitol plans to promote the album for at least several more months. On their last tour, the Twins played the Wiltern Theatre, and their move up to the 6,000-seat Universal Amphitheatre reflects the band's growing commercial base.  The current tour--their first since 1990--will also be their first with a full band. Having previously relied on sequencers to reproduce the full sound of their albums, the band is now touring with two more guitarists, a percussionist and a drummer.  http://articles.latimes.com/images/pixel.gif"I used to be completely paranoid about live performance," said Raymonde about the Twins' decision to tour with a full band. "I wish we'd done it before because it sounds so much better."What can you lose? Maybe we'll bring some other musicians on a record one day. You've got to be open-minded about these things. You don't really get anywhere unless you change."
* The Cocteau Twins and opening act Luna appear Sunday at the Universal Amphitheatre, 100 Universal City Plaza, Universal City, (818) 980-9421. $20 and $25. 8:15 p.m.; Tuesday at Symphony Hall, 1245 7th Ave., San Diego. $22.50. (619) 699-4205. 8 p.m.; Wednesday at Bridges Auditorium, Claremont Colleges, Claremont. $20. (909) 621-8032. 8 p.m.

And if you can find it, maybe on YouTube, they played the Tonight Show w/Jay Leno the week after this show and did Bluebeard.

I may have the wrong set list up, so here is my other Luna one. One of these is correct!
