1992 – Soul Asylum – Palace Theatre

1992 12.08 Soul Asylum The Palace

Ok, got these tickets free from KROQ.  Went with Cathy.  Opening band was the Lemonheads.  These were big KROQ bands at the time.  All I really remember was Dave Pirner buying me a beer at the upstairs bar.

Here is a review from the L.A. Times:

Pop Music Review
Soul Asylum, Lemonheads Paired at Palace
December 10, 1992
KATHERINE TURMAN
Two of America's up-and-coming purveyors of regular-guy garage-rock teamed up at the Palace Tuesday, where Soul Asylum and the Lemonheads faced off in a display of tour-till-you-drop music nurtured on blood, sweat and beers.Equal parts hope, cynicism and humor, Minneapolis' Soul Asylum's songs ran the gamut from the aggressive, hook-filled "Somebody to Shove" to the spare, midtempo "Nice Guys Don't Get Paid." But the performance proved that the secret weapon in the quartet's Replacements-like jangly rock is frontman Dave Pirner, a powerful, engaging presence who led his band on a loose, high-energy journey. Highlights included a version of "To Sir, With Love" with guest singer Victoria Williams and the strident rave-up "Get On Out." The second-billed Lemonheads are less aggressive, but equally compelling. Breezing through a too-short set that concluded with a raucous rendition of "Mrs. Robinson," the Boston trio hit the mark with its pure, earnest, approach. The infectious "Alison's Starting to Happen" and the yearning quality of "It's a Shame About Ray," the title track of its latest album, mark leader Evan Dando as quirky but accessible wordsmith. After several years of cutting their teeth in the "underground," both groups are now clearly well-placed for more mainstream success in today's wide-open post-Nirvana climate.

This was an amazing show!  One of my all time favourites!  Went with Cathy.
We had good seats too!  But there isn't a bad seat at The Wiltern!
This show was campy and fun and pure entertainment.  Loved the many costume changes!!

1992 – Morrissey – Del Mar Fairgrounds

1992 10.31 Morrissey Del Mar Fairgrounds

Halloween!  Went with my Mom, Bianca and Shawn.  This was really a bizarre show.  It was in a show horse pavilion.  The floor had hay and puddles of water.  I worried the band would get electricuted!  It was just the oddest place to see a show.  No seats everyone just gathered around the stage or wandered.  And since it was Morrissey, loads of flowers and people getting on stage with him.  It was an interesting way to spend Halloween!

Set List:
You're Gonna Need Someone On Your Side
Glamorous Glue
The Loop
Sister I'm A Poet
Certain People I know
Seasick...
Such A Little Thing...
I Know It's Gonna Happen Someday

1992 – Morrissey – Hollywood Bowl

1992 10.10 Morrissey Hollywood Bowl

Bianca and I went to this show!  Just the two of us.  I was sick.
I was guzzling cough syrup since I had the dreaded cough I get when
I am finishing my annual bout of pneumonia!   So my drink of choice,
Robitussin!  We even caught the park n' ride.  It was fun.  People were
partying on the bus and ready for an amazing show.  Bianca and I had
seen Morrissey before and this was a day after Bianca's birthday and
seemed like a fun way to get out and about!!
No Smiths songs, loads of flowers thrown on the stage and people trying
to get on stage to hug him.  I remember it being a good show.

During this time and especially living in L.A. there were certain artists you went to see.
KROQ was the radio station that fueled what we listened to.  They loved The Smiths, Morrissey, U2, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Depeche Mode and The Cure among others.  When these artists were coming to town KROQ went crazy with interviews, promotions and playing these artists songs all the time.  They even made special KROQ bumper stickers to hand out after the shows.  So when this show went on sale and sold 18,000 tickets in 20 some minutes it was an amazing thing.  You wanted to be part of it, you had to be there.  And well, I am a sucker for Frank Lloyd Wright, I love the Hollywood Bowl!

Went with Cathy and Bianca.  What a great show.  We had lawn seats.  Now any one who know me knows how much I hate the lawn at Irvine!  Its that crazy hill you have to walk up to get to it.  We had an excellent spot and could see the main stage perfectly.  I had binoculars and my tape recorder.  I have somewhere a bad cassette recording of each of the main stage bands at this show.  Don't know why but I do!  I remember the fires once night fell.  I remember Cathy saving my life as she pulled me from a mosh pit as I was about to be trampled!  But I loved Ministry's set.  We stayed till the Chili Peppers came on and then left.  Walked to the car while they played.  Didn't see any of the second stage bands.  Once I was up that hill I was there to stay!  Hate now that I didn't see Tool.

1992 – Peter Murphy – Greek Theatre

1992 07.03 Peter Murphy The Greek Theatre

What a great show!  Love Peter Murphy!  The Nymphs were supposed to be the opening band but well, something happened and Machines of Loving Grace ended up taking the spot.  It was a weird night.  I ended up not having a way to the show and my Mom ended up driving me.  No, I did not drive.  She stayed in the car parked outside the Greek waiting for me or so I thought.  I looked up at one point and she was walking around the venue.  They gave her a ticket and she had better seats than anyone I knew.  Saw Christine and Justin, Ron and Jenna there.  Bianca did you go to this one?  Can't remember....

1992 – U2 – L.A. Sports Arena

1992 04.13 U2 The L.A. Sports Arena

What an epic show!  This was the Zoo TV tour.  The opening band was The Pixies.  I had a weird time at this show.  I went with a guy I knew from work named Robert Harrison.  He was nice to talk to at work but very quiet and uncomfortable to see a show with.  We had weird seats.  Directly behind the stage so some of the show was obstructed, other times it was great cause you could see so much of the venue.

1992 – Alison Moyet – Variety Arts Theatre

1992 03.12 Alison Moyet Variety Arts Theatre

Cathy and I both love Alison Moyet.  She has such a wonderful voice.  Of course most know her from Yazzoo with Vince Clarke.  She puts on an old fashioned show.  A singer, on a stage, singing.  No fancy lights or dance numbers.  Back in our favourite new venue, The Variety Arts Theatre.  I do hate that we didn't see the show there the next night, Nine Inch Nails!  It was already sold out by the time we heard about it.

1992 – Nitzer Ebb – Variety Arts Theatre

1992 02.27 Nitzer Ebb Variety Arts Theatre

Cathy and I were on a concert streak!  We had a new venue, The Variety Arts Theatre in Downtown L.A.  They had opened for Depeche Mode and were so much fun.  Pure energy and I always was a sucker for the psuedo industrial (i say that cause purests will laugh if i put this band in with "real" industrial bands like, cabaret voltaire or kraftwerk)  music!
